What is SEO?

A plain explanation of how search engines work and what SEO actually is — crawling, indexing, ranking, and the four things that decide where you land.

SEO — search engine optimisation — is the work of making a website the answer a search engine chooses to show. That is the whole definition. Everything else is detail about how search engines decide.

The reason it has a reputation for being mysterious is that people usually learn the tactics before the mechanism. Learn the mechanism first and most tactics become obvious, including which ones are a waste of your afternoon.

How a search engine actually works

Three separate processes, in order. A page can pass the first and fail the second, or pass both and still never rank. Knowing which stage you are failing at is most of the diagnostic work.

1. Crawling

A bot follows links around the web and fetches pages. If nothing links to your page and it is not in your sitemap, the bot has no route to it and will never see it. Crawling is a discovery problem.

2. Indexing

The fetched page is parsed, rendered, understood and stored. A page can be crawled and still not indexed — because it is a near-duplicate of another page, because it carries a noindex tag, because it canonicalises elsewhere, or because the engine judged it not worth storing.

3. Ranking

When someone searches, the engine pulls candidate pages from the index and orders them. This is the part everyone means when they say SEO, and it is the last of the three — which is why optimising a page that is not indexed is wasted effort.

What ranking is decided on

Search engines use hundreds of signals, but they collapse into four questions. Almost every real SEO task is an answer to one of them.

Does the page match the intent?

Not the keyword — the intent behind it. Someone searching 'running shoes' wants to browse products. Someone searching 'how to choose running shoes' wants guidance. Serving a product grid to the second query loses, no matter how well optimised the grid is.

The fastest way to check intent is to search the term yourself and look at what already ranks. If the first page is all comparison articles, the engine has decided that query wants a comparison article. You do not get to argue with that.

Is the page any good?

Concretely: does it answer the question completely, first-hand, and without making the reader hunt? Depth matters, but padding is not depth. A 600-word page that fully answers the question beats a 3,000-word page that circles it.

Is the site trusted?

Links from other sites remain the strongest external trust signal, because they are hard to fake at scale. So are mentions, reviews and citations elsewhere. A new site with a perfect page will usually lose to an established site with a decent one — for a while.

Can the page be used?

It loads quickly, it works on a phone, it does not shift under the reader's thumb, and it is not buried in interstitials. These are threshold conditions more than ranking boosts: being fast will not lift you past a better answer, but being slow will drop you below an equal one.

The parts of SEO

The field is usually split into three, and the split is useful because the three need different skills.

  • On-page SEO — the content and markup of a single page: what it covers, how it is titled and structured, how it links out to related pages.
  • Technical SEO — everything that decides whether a page can be crawled, rendered and indexed at all: site architecture, speed, sitemaps, canonicals, structured data.
  • Off-page SEO — the signals that come from elsewhere: links, mentions, reviews, and being cited by sources the engine already trusts.

Technical SEO decides whether you are in the race. On-page decides which race you are in. Off-page decides how far up the field you start.

What has changed, and what has not

Search results increasingly include AI-generated answers that synthesise several sources rather than listing ten links. That changes the shape of the payoff — being the source cited inside an answer is now as valuable as holding a blue link.

What has not changed is what makes a page citable: it is specific, it is self-contained, it answers directly, and it can be verified elsewhere. Those were already the qualities that ranked well. The mechanism moved; the work did not.

A first month that is not wasted

  1. Verify the site in Google Search Console and submit a sitemap. Until you can see what is indexed, you are guessing.
  2. Fix indexing before anything else — pages that are crawled but not indexed, wrong canonicals, accidental noindex tags.
  3. Pick five queries you genuinely deserve to rank for, search each one, and read what currently ranks. That is your brief.
  4. Write or rewrite one page per query, matched to the intent you observed rather than the one you assumed.
  5. Link those pages to each other and from your main navigation, so both crawlers and readers can reach them in one hop.

None of that requires a tool subscription, and it will move more than any amount of keyword-density tinkering. SEO gets complicated at scale; it does not start complicated.
